January Meeting Minutes 1/21/17

Welcome & introductions
Theme of the year- scrap attack

Question of the day: If you could be any pre-cut fabric, what would you be?
Fat Quarter, a scrap, a jelly roll- “because they are nice and thin”, cherrywood color pack, kona
charm pack, layer cake, odds and ends bundle, a charm pack because  I’m so charming, a
whole bolt, a remnant- leftover from last year, a bolt of baby fabric,  a layer cake- chocolate-
sometimes bittersweet, scrap bag,

2017 Dues- Claire transitioning to Nancy this year, dues pay by cash or check here $40, after
next board meeting a budget can be presented

Ongoing projects
Cat beds- Angela in charge, has supplies if needed, will need help distributing.
Charity- Variety of options- postage stamps, 10-12 kits need taken home for finishing, half
square triangles, need help cutting after today’s meeting for 2/4’s sew day- 32 baby quilts
planned.  Chuck and Mike brought 10 fleece blankets for donation.  156 were donated  by guild
last year.
Lending library- closed today, will be here on 11 Feb. meeting.
Retreat- no date or venue yet, look for questionnaire for venue preference
Text challenge- due in Feb. see Karen for details
Tooling lending library- any interest? See Claire
Challenges for 2017-
3-4 over the year, First one starting in Feb. all working with scraps. Bring scraps to share in
February- more details to come in the forum
Small groups-
interest groups that meet after the main meeting
Slow Stitchers- hand sewing of all kinds
Desire more groups to be started, let Amy know if there are more that exist that need announced

How do you earn: wear name tag, charity work, cat bed work, participate in swaps and
challenges, charity prep work, outside community events (for example- days for girls,
volunteering in meetings
There is checksheet to indicate how you have earned some for that meeting.  Ziplock bags
provided to label with name and can be left at meetings if desired, or you can take them home
after each meeting

Group activity, Color palette exploration,
How does this work- each month explore a member’s color palette, presented with a small
swatch of these colors, present a theme inspired or related to the palette, other members can
then take home swatch and using their own fabrics and make a chunk to be given to that’s
month’s presenter

Meeting Tomorrow!

Happy New Year, BAMers! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Saturday January 21, 2017, for our first monthly guild meeting of the year! Join us at 1:00, at the Redwood City Library, in the upstairs community room.

Things to bring:

We will be cutting charity fabrics in preparation for the upcoming Charity Sew Day. Please bring rulers, mats, and rotary cutters.

• IRR Round Robin bins and bags
• Lucky Spools work 
• Show and Tell - this is a great way to get to know people
• Your name tag 
• Charity blocks and quilts 
• Small Group projects (and ideas for new Small Groups!) 
• Information about local/national quilty happenings 
• Non-messy snacks 
• Sewing projects for after the meeting

Color My Quilt

Color My Quilt

     — Explore another member’s color palette

     — Explore colors outside of your typical selections

     — Experiment with design in a group setting

Each month we explore a color palette of that month’s Colorist.

Each participant creates a chunk that matches the palette

The Colorist creates a set of 25 packets to had out at the meeting with the following information:

     1.  A set of small fabric swatches representing the color palette

     2.  A theme, concept, or idea in words and/or photos to inspire a direction

Each participant goes home and makes a Chunk using that color palette with the following rules:

     1.  No design requirements:  improv, regular block anything goes

     2.  Use your own stash, use any scraps you might have

     3.  Stick to the palette:  no new colors except in very small amounts in a print

     4.  You do not have to use all the colors in the palette

     5.  Minimal size of each side:  5”

     6.  Maximum size of any side:  20”

     7.  Add your name on a piece of paper / fabric and attach to your chunk

     8.  Post photo on Instagram #colormyquilt

Follow on meeting:

     1.  Each participant brings their Chunk to the meeting

     2.  After the meeting, we can play and discuss design ideas together

Colorist:

     1.  Owns the design and the chunks

     2.  Will most likely need to add to the collection to complete the design

     3.  Is free to cut, modify or not use any chunk of their choice

     4.  The design will be a challenge!

Repeat each month till we run out of members who wish to be Colorists.

Members will use the Ning Forum to sign up Colorists for the month. Pick a

month, and talk to Karen about adding you to the list.

Sew Day Report!

Mary, once again, did a great job setting up and organizing the room for us. Thanks, Mary!



Tim was there with his niece Haley and they put a t-shirt quilt together for her. She just graduated from college and the quilt is made from all of her college t-shirts. It looks great!

I worked on cutting. I started cutting for the second step of the En Provence mystery quilt. People have started posting the blocks and I am glad I am making it. I can choose some colors better now that I know what the piece will look like. I know I am not quite finished with step one, but cutting is a good thing to do at Sew Day and it doesn't go bad. I didn't feel like bringing my machine to the event.



Rhonda worked on her Carolyn Friedlander handwork quilt. She started to put the segments together. Another great project!

The first  guild Sew Day of 2017 is tomorrow, Saturday January 7, 2017. Did I say that's TOMORROW!?!?!

Plan to bring your own:

• Extension cord and/or power strip
• Sewing machine
• Cutting tools (your own personal mat if you want)
• Fabric and other project parts
