Help the Kids at Sandy Hook Elementary

I saw this on Mark Lipinski's Facebook page. Thanks, Mark, for being in the loop and sharing this great opportunity.

Here is YOUR chance to help the families in Newtown...

Becky at Quilter's Corner quilt shop in New Milford, CT is collecting pillowcases for the children at Sandy Hook School. She is trying to collect around 600. Please pass this message to any sewing friends. Pillowcases can be mailed to her at Quilters Corner, 312 Danbury Rd, New Milford, CT. 06776.

HOW TO MAKE EASY, FAST PILLOWCASES: http://yhoo.it/Uq5AHj

Members of our guild have written about pillowcases on their own blogs in the past. The pattern your editor likes is the Twiddletails pattern. The French seams means no raw edges, but the pattern can be a little tricky to understand.

What fun fabrics do you have that could help to brighten  a child's day? I have some Mexican food fabric that is great for boys!

2013 Meeting Dates/Times/Places

Mark your calendars, folks!  The meeting times for 2013 are IN.

Due to room conflicts, we have had to move our meeting time to a 1:30pm start.  We will have meeting time from approximately 1:30-3:30 and sewing/snacking/socializing time from 3:30 to 5pm.  Also, we were unable to get the regular meeting place for some months, so January, March, and June are at the Redwood SHORES library instead of the downtown library branch.  Compared to the regular spot, Redwood shores is a few minutes north on 101 and on the other side of the highway.  Redwood shores has a cafe inside of the library, so unfortunately we are not allowed to bring snacks to share when we meet there.

Redwood City Library (most meetings)  Meetings are in the upstairs community room
1044 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063
tel: 650.780.7018

Redwood Shores Library (Jan, Mar, June) Meetings are in the community room, not the smaller meeting rooms.

BAM Challenges 2012 Recap

By Ruth

Where did the year go?  It really flew by.  This was a huge year for Bay Area Modern, full TONS of activities and events.

We started out the year with the Me, Me, Me (Echo) Challenge, a guild-sponsored selfish-sewing challenge using Lotta Jansdotters Echo line.  The projects were amazing!

My favorites were probably the Storm at Sea wall hanging that Marci made:

And the quilt that Adrianne made with some additional hoarded prints:

There were a lot of other amazing and creative projects, including sewing organizers, journal covers, bags, placemats, pillows, and of course more quilts!  Confession time guys... my Echo challenge project was a sewing machine cover that I ended up never using.  It looked kind of lumpy on my machine, and I use the machine so often that it was always off and sitting on the table (in my way) or on the floor (collecting dog hair).  I love the fabric and pattern, so last sew day I took it apart into quilted panels.  I think I'm going to turn it into a bag (thanks Adrianne for the suggestion!)

For the second challenge this year, we joined in the Modern Quilt Guild international challenge to make quilt blocks in the QuiltCon colors.  Plus, we each made a duplicate set of blocks in the local colors.  The designs were amazing and it was so fun to follow along with the submissions featured on the Modern Quilt Guild blog and pick out the ones from our local folks!

Our QuiltCon blocks:

And our local submissions:
It's confession time again already???  The plan is to make a guild banner or quilt using the submitted blocks, but I haven't done anything yet.  Yeeep, sorry guys!

The last challenge of the year was a whole cloth challenge sponsored by Aurifil.  The quilts were AMAZING!

Ok, so you really can't appreciate it that well from the photo - people created amazing designs with their quilting that just have to be seen up close.

Maybe if we get a little closer... like to Colleen's quilt (she quilted the Millennium falcon BY HAND):

It's awesome, Colleen!

We also did a block challenge that ran the entire year... the ABC challenge.   At the December meeting we saw some quilts that are already being assembled, and there's more to come.  I'm really looking forward to seeing all the finished quilts!

Wondering about our next guild challenge?  YES, we are planning to participate in the MQG Madrona Road challenge.  Fabric should be here in time for the January meeting.  I'm looking forward to seeing what everybody does!  Here's to another year of great challenges, guys!

Hurricane Sandy Donations

When our group started the charity project, we had a goal of 25 quilts. We, as you may know have dozens and dozens - many more than 25 - quilts to donate. We never know what our fellow human beings will be facing, but the charity quilts are there for the planned donations as well as unexpected needs.

Most of you have seen the images of the devastation wrought by Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy. Again, your generosity of time and spirit by making quilts is enabling us to provide some comfort to some of those victims. The Charity Girls, Deborah and Jennifer, explain below:

by Deborah and Jennifer

Jen and I are collecting monetary donations for shipping fees so that we can send about 10 or so charity quilts made by the guild members this year to victims of Hurricane Sandy.  We currently have $50 in donations, and need $17 more to cover shipping. Any overages will be used to further support the guild's charity project

Here's the info posted on the forum:

"If you'd like to make a contribution, please send the funds through Paypal.  Here is the info:
From your PayPal account select the 'send money' tab.
Enter bamodernquilt@gmail.com in the 'TO' tab and the donation amount in the 'AMOUNT' tab.
Click the 'PERSONAL' tab right below the USD drop down menu.
Select 'OTHER' option.
Click CONTINUE.
Enter 'Sandy Postage' as the subject
Click 'SEND MONEY'
Please leave a comment here if you make a contribution through Paypal so that Sara can track funds sent for this relief effort.
Thanks in advance for your generosity!

November Meeting Notes

As usual, the meeting was great. Lots of people, quilts and a good demo. For some reason, your editor's camera does not want to take photos when am out and about. The battery (not fatal) ran out  and I forgot the spare at home, so I only took a few photos with my phone. I'll try to do better next time.

Pincushion Swap
Vintage Modern Pincushion
Vintage Modern Pincushion

The pincushion swap was successful. There were a lot of really great pincushions. Kelly wins the big *ss pincushion award. She likes big pincushions and she made one for the swap. There were probably a dozen that were given in. It will be interesting to see what the Kansas City Quilt Guild sends us back. Thanks to Adrianne for organizing.

Donation Quilts
Yellow & Pink Donation Top
Yellow & Pink Donation Top
More donation quilts floated in. The word on the BAMQG street is that we have collected/made/produced 99. More went out to be quilted and finished, so I am sure we will break 100 at the next meeting.

Jennifer and Deborah had kits and cat beds available and people took the kits to make more.
Cross/Plus charity quilt
Cross/Plus charity quilt
Peggy made this Cross/Plus quilt for the charity effort as well. The colors in the photo don't do it justice. The quilt is a really nice combination of turquoise and scarlet. I believe that Kathleen made a quilt like this in a swap earlier this year. These may be the leftover or reject blocks from that quilt. If they are rejects, they are perfect in this quilt- definitely a lemonade from lemons situation.

Show & Tell
Sparkling Cider by Mallory
Sparkling Cider by Mallory
There was a lot of great show and tell in addition to the pincushions. One of the quilts that I really liked was a from a pattern called Sparkling Cider by All Washed Up quilts. The fabrics used for the pattern's packaging doesn't do the layout justice. Mallory used Tula Pink's Plume Collection from a few years ago. Mallory does a great job using these fabrics to best effect in this quilt. One thing I like about the Sparkling Cider pattern is that the blocks are large, but the quilt design is not boring. There are some nice renditions of the pattern on Flickr, too.
Adrianne's Modern Amish
Adrianne's Modern Amish
Adrianne saw an advertisement for modern Amish quilts that were needed for a book. The deadline was very short and since publishers require that a quilt not be published anywhere else, including on a blog (So many of us who participate in social media are so totally screwed on this front) that many quilts people had already made were ineligible. Adrianne got inspired and started work on this quilt. She said she didn't make the deadline, but she finished the quilt and it is a really great piece. The negative space is a really interesting shape. This could be made with the Fons & Porter Pyramid ruler.
I know you can see it, but the quilting is horizontal lines across the whole quilt, which looks great.

Alison's baby quilt
Alison's baby quilt
Alison brought a baby quilt made from fabric from a Malka Dubrowsky's first hand-dyed looking line, A Stitch in Color. It came out really well. It sounded like she said she did  a sort of Jelly Roll technique, but the description sounded like she managed the design process more than the directions for a Jelly Roll Race quilt usually suggest. She added in the parallelograms to break up the fabric motifs. I like those parallelograms; I think they add a bit of stability to the design as well.

Sew Time
A few of us stayed until the bitter end. Only Alison was doing anything remotely related to sewing. The rest of us were chatting and socializing. If you are not sure what to do at sew time, it is a great time to baste quilts or cut out projects, especially things like bags and other accessories.

December meeting will be on December 1. Remember to bring your FQ Swap fabrics.

Pincushion Swap Ideas

We're makin' pincushions!  Our lovely president got us invited to participate in the KCMQG (Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild, in case you’re wondering) pin cushion swap.   Hope you have started!

You’ll bring your pincushion into the NOVEMBER meeting to hand in.  Then, in December you will get back a totally  DIFFERENT pincushion, made for you by the precious little fingers of another far-flung guild member.  Those participating in the pincushion swap are: Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild, Austin, Wichita, Vancouver, Indianapolis, and US! (Did you see Vancouver in there? That means you might get an INTERNATIONAL pincushion of mystery, a pincushion who has seen the world and will tell you all its stories about it!)

Any size, shape, form is acceptable, however, make it a Modern aesthetic.  It shouldn’t be breakable, but you can fill it with any appropriate filling [sand, crushed walnut cells (lizard litter from PetCo), polyfil, etc].  When you bring in your pincushion, make sure it has a little label that says your name, BAMQG, and what it is stuffed with.

Here is a write-up by the Vancouver guild, and includes links to all the guilds participating!
http://vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca/blog/2012/09/pincushion-swap-wi...

And yes, BTW, questions are welcomed. Post them on the forum or in a comment below.

Remember: place your pincushion in a zipper plastic bag and label with:
  • your name
  • your blog and/or your email address
  • the filling (crushed walnuts, pellets, etc)
The labeling is due to some allergies to nuts that have come up with other pincushion swaps. Bring your fabulous creation to the November meeting.

Inspiration and Patterns:

Our fearless leader, Adrianne, has found a bunch of patterns, which we have listed below. We have also had some additional contributions. If you find any other superfabulistic patterns you want to share, post them in the comments here or send them to Jaye and she will incorporate them into a blog post.

Sew Day Sunday! October 21

Our next Sew Day is this coming Sunday, October 21, 12pm-11pm (yes, noon to 11pm - 11 hours of sewing goodness!)

Charity Sewing will go from 12pm-5pm. After 5pm, it will be open sew
for your own projects.
Please RSVP in the forum if you are coming, so we can get a head count.

The Charity Coordinators have us working on building a group quilt,
the Strip and Flip Baby Quilt from Cluck, Cluck Sew:
http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2012/07/tutorial-strip-and-flip-baby-quilt.html

There will also be the previous charity blocks and quilts to work on and finish!

Location:
Los Altos Library
13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos, California, 94022
http://g.co/maps/kvpkt
Note: This is not the same location as our regular Sew Day meetings.

Shout out if you can bring these items to share:

    Light/non-messy snacks
    Irons (need 3 total)
    Ironing Boards (need 3 total)
    Large Cutting Mats (need 2)
    Design Walls (need 2)

Plan to bring your own:

    Extension cord and/or power strip
    Sewing machine
Cutting tools/mats (you might want a personal one)
Night-owls may want to bring an iron and cutting mat if an
early-bird needs to take theirs home.

We will be in the Community Room of the Los Altos Library. It's the
large room on the side of the library nearest San Antonio Rd. There
are two sets of double doors on the outside of the library - both lead
into a foyer area, and the Community Room door is on the left part of
this foyer, the checkout desk is on the right.
If you arrive late (after 6pm when the library closes), knock on the
doors closest to the Community Room, and someone should be able to let
you inside.

We will need to set up and take down tables and chairs, which are
available at the library. Please plan to help with this. Also please
try to keep your floor area clean.
Coffee and other light snacks are available in the foyer of the library.
People often pick up meals from a local restaurant. There are many
places nearby, or you can take San Antonio to El Camino and find many
restaurants and markets there.

B-A-M Demo Series - Finishing Your Quilt

by Rhonda

It's hard to believe but it's time for the 4th and final installment of the B-A-M Demo Series - Finishing Your Quilt.

I'm looking for one or more volunteers to do a demo on binding or labeling.

Do you have a set of tried-and-true binding tips, tools, and tricks?
Have you tried an out-of-the-ordinary binding technique recently?
Would you like to demo your favorite labeling technique(s)?

Something simple?  Something EXTREME?  We're up for anything!

Send me a message via the Forum if you would like to volunteer to do a demo at the November meeting.

Rockin' Holiday Swaps! Part 2

by Amanda
Get ready all you savvy-crafty super-swappy peeps! It’s time to rock the holiday swap!
For this year’s holiday we’re swapping TIMES TWO. You heard that right – it’s a chance to get more gifts than you could ever-ever possibly dream of!  Okay, maybe that’s being a tad bit melodramatic, but you get the picture, right?  We wanted to please all you crafters and shoppers, so this year, if you choose to join in the FUN, we’ll be making a faboo pincushion gift to swap, and also bringing in a purchased gift of a fat quarter stack to swap.
So, are you in or out?!? Wait, what’s that you say – you need details?  Alright already, keep your fabulously-quilted panties on – here they are:
THE DEETS
PART 1: The Crafty-Makey EXTRAGUILDULAR Pincushion Gift Swap: See the post from yesterday

PART 2: The “let’s go shopping or raid our stash” purchasey-assembly Fat Quarter Stack Swap: This one starts in NOVEMBER and ends in December.  For the November meeting, bring in a piece of paper with your name on it and a list of fabric you like – include favorite designers, favorite colors, prints or solids, or even OOP (out of print) fabrics you wish you could’ve gotten your hand on. (Who knows, maybe your swapper shops at the super-secret quilty black market, where one must escape from rotary cutters aplenty, and can embark on a breathtaking adventure to get you that coveted piece of fabric!) Then turn those requests into Amanda and she will match you up with another quilty-crafty-guildy member, who will then put together a fat quarter stack of 5-8 fat quarters, and will bring that stack to you at the December meeting/holiday party.  And yes, you too shall get a name and list of fabricy-type quarters to get for your super-secret swappy partner.

Alright, so NOW are you IN?!?! I hope so!!  Leave a note on the forum (yes, you have to be a member, but that is easy to remedy if you are not already a member!) to let us know whether you’re playing (ahem, sewing, shopping) or not.  Tell us whether you’re doing one or the other or BOTH! We’ll take whatever swapping we can get from you to make this a rockin’ holiday swap!

And yes, BTW, questions are welcomed. Post a note below or on the forum.
