To Boston with Love

We are making flags for Boston!

The Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is collecting flags from guilds around the world.  It's a fun and easy project to do.  Make as many as you'd like and bring them to the meeting on May 11th or to the retreat on May 19th.  UPDATE: The deadline has been moved up.  We will need all flags at the meeting, May 11th.  Thank you.  : )

"The overall idea is to provide Boston with an uplifting experience from quilters and sewists around the globe." - Vancouver MQG

DETAILS
For complete instructions, inspiration and two patterns, go to the Vancouver MQG blog.

  • Size: 6"x8" with a 16" binding strip for ties
  • Colors: Uplifting bright colors (see recommended palette below)
  • Style: Modern
  • Theme: Love, Hearts, Peace

After you make your flag, please add it to the To Boston with Love flickr group or if you're on Instagram tag it #tobostonwithlove.

BAM-BOM Block #4 Spring Mod Block

This post is part of the Block of the Month series, sponsored by Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  See all the blocks right here.

We did not post the March block separately (it was in the meeting report) so if you missed that, the March block was the Snails Trail.

For April, we are teaming up with the Portland Modern Quilt Guild.  They are doing their own BOM, but this month we planned to do the same one at the same time for a bit of extra fun.  Remember this QuiltCon Challenge Block by Heather at joyofallcrafts? (Heather used to live in the Bay Area and was in our guild before moving to Portland a few years ago.)
 .

Awesome, right?  Heather offered (ok, so we kind of volunteered her) to make at tutorial for a 12" version of her block.  Head over to her blog and check out the gorgeous Spring Mod version that she design for us.

http://g.co/maps/kvpkt
Note: This is not the same location as our regular meetings.

Shout out if you can bring these items to share:
  • Light/non-messy snacks
  • Irons (need 3 total)
  • Ironing Boards (need 3 total)
  • Large Cutting Mats (need 2)
  • Design Walls (need 2)

Plan to bring your own:
  • Extension cord and/or power strip
  • Sewing machine
  • Cutting tools/mats (you might want a personal one)
  • Night-owls may want to bring an iron and cutting mat if an early-bird needs to take theirs home.

We will be in the Community Room of the Los Altos Library. It's the large room on the side of the library nearest San Antonio Rd. There are two sets of double doors on the outside of the library - both lead into a foyer area, and the Community Room door is on the left part of this foyer, the checkout desk is on the right.

If you arrive first, go talk to the librarian at the children's reference desk to check in.

If you arrive late (after 6pm when the library closes), knock on the doors closest to the Community Room, and someone should be able to let you inside.

We will need to set up and take down tables and chairs, which are available at the library. Please plan to help with this. Also please try to keep your floor area clean.
Coffee and other light snacks are available in the foyer of the library.
People often pick up meals from a local restaurant. There are many places nearby, or you can take San Antonio to El Camino and find many restaurants and markets there.

Thanks to Diana for organizing!

Social Media Chair NEEDED!!!

Your guild needs YOU!!!!

One of the jobs that is fundamental to the guild (and all modern groups) is the Social Media Chair. The social media chair oversees the online side of the guild - including the blog, forum, and Flickr. The forum administrator, blog content contributors, meeting notetaker, and photographer report to the social media chair. Responsibilities include blog planning and scheduling with the content contributors and ensuring that event and activity information is posted online.

At this time, the Social Media Chair position is open and the coordinators for the blog, Flickr, etc are soldiering along on their own. The S.M. Chair doe NOT do all the work; s/he just coordinates everyone and makes the social media stuff get done.

This is a great opportunity to expand your skills (resume builder, if you are looking for that!) in:
  • delegating
  • working with a diverse group of people
  • overseeing a calendar of events [to post]
  • learning new technologies.
FAME: everyone in the guild will know you and thank you for making Bay Area Modern ahead of the curve in social media
POWER: you will have the power to influence blog topics, Flickr sets and what is posted on the Facebook page. You will get management experience.
GLORY: The success of your programming decisions will make you sought after by other Modern Guilds.

If you are interested in this position, please speak to Ruth.  Your guild needs YOU!!!!

Destash Party Details

The details:
It’s spring cleaning time in your sewing room, craft drawers, and quilty bookshelf.  Bring along the items that you’re done with, as much as you like but at least a small bag of stuff.  When you get to the meeting, there will be a table designated to drop off your bags and boxes – no peeking!  We will have a couple of non-participating volunteers empty all of the containers and return them to you (so label your bags and boxes with your name – taped or pinned on is fine).
When everything is ready we will do a count of three and then sprint to the goodie pile to load up our bags.
Stuff to bring:
  • Fabric of any kind and style.  If pieces are small you can bundle them together or bag them.  You don’t really need to make ‘em pretty but a rubber band or string would be helpful to keep things from getting too unfolded.  Upholstery weight fabric is fine too.
  • Fabric scraps packaged up so that they don’t make a mess – a ziplock is fine.
  • Patterns
  • Craft/sewing/quilting magazines & books
  • Notions
  • Other crafty stuff that you are done with:  yarn, paper, felt, scrapbook supplies, etc.
They say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” but please refrain from bringing things that are everybody’s trash.  No small, loose scraps of fabric or batting – bagged scraps are great.  No damaged, stained, or worn fabric unless it is usable vintage.  If it’s not in donatable condition, just toss it rather than bringing it.
Again, you can bring as much as you want, or just a small bag of stuff.  Folks who brought items will get first go at the table, but when they are satiated, peeps who forgot will also get a chance to help themselves.  We have a couple of volunteers who will be taking the leftover items for donation.
Thanks to the St. Louis MQG for this awesome idea!
