Lanyards & Nametags: Name tag Resources and Ideas

At the recent December meeting, Kelly suggested we all make Lanyards and Name tags that reflected our own style. We posted about lanyards and are now here to give you ideas about namet ags.

A simple Google search using the terms (no quotes) "nametags fabric" will give you a lot of eye candy. Switch over to the images tab and just look at the variety of options. Some people did a little piecing. Some added a small image and their blog name.

Some musts:
  • Make sure your name is readable: large font, bold, dark color or good contrast with background
  • Make your name tag a reflection of your personality

Inspiration
  • add blog name
  • add your Avatar or social media image
  • add some piecing
  • machine embroider your name
  • hand embroider your name
  • Use a different shape for your nametag - star, shipping tag, circle, rainbow, heart, assymmetrical
  • Print on fabric with your printer
  • Shape it and put a pocket for a pen, etc
  • Check out this Pinterest board called Quilty Name Tags
Use a shape Add a love or hobby (besides quiltmaking!) Add buttons or other embellishments Make it three dimensional Make it round (or not rectangular)
Use your favorite colors, embroidery AND embellishments!

There are a lot more ideas out there. Use your imagination! I can't wait to see what you come up with. ;-)

Lanyards and Nametags: Lanyard Resources & Ideas

Kelly, the incoming President, asked everyone make a lanyard and a nametag that reflects them and their style. There will be a special show and tell to see your beautiful work.

Lanyards are about 37" long before finishing. You may want to adjust this length if you are taller or shorter.

If you want some direction on making lanyards, here are some links:
A couple of the above use a cover to finish the lanyard where you have sewn the clasp or hook on to the fabric. You can also finish the end of the fabric before sewing on the clasp or hook.

There are, of course, many other tutorials available. Use your favorite along with some pretty scraps to reflect your quiltmaking style or personality.
Hardware
Some patterns call for various hardware. Think about the following, but check the pattern before purchasing:
  • swivel hooks (Try Studio Kat Designs and Atkinson Designs)
  • swivel clasp (one tutorial mentioned TWPMango* as a source.
  • O ring (try the hardware store, if you can't find a good size at your LQS)
  • Badge clips with swivel (JKMribbon* has them)
  • Nickel sanphooks have an interesting shape. I am not sure how to connect them to a fabric lanyard, though.
I did find O rings in a variety of sizes as well as rectangle metal things other hardware that might be useful at a couple of non-chain hardware stores in the City - Standard 5&10 on California Street in Laurel Heights as well as at Cliff's Variety on Castro in the Castro. Check your local mom and pop hardware stores to see what you can find.
Shops*:
 Other thoughts:
  • Try some ribbon instead of fabric. Britex has some lovely thick ribbons that would make some special looking lanyards.
  • Use scraps to make the main part of the lanyard
  • Add beads or buttons to personalize it
  • Make it more of a chatelaine by adding a scissor pocket and other handy accessories, such as a Lip Balm Key Fob. I found a few chatelaine tutorials here.
  • The You Sew Girl blog has a Convertible Strap tutorial, which will give you ideas about how to add other types of hardware to your lanyard. Need some extra rings? Check  out this tutorial. Want to use your bias tape maker? This tutorial is for you.
  • Perhaps you want your lanyard to be adjustable? Take a look at the adjustable strap tutorial.
There are a lot of options for you to personalize your lanyard. Let your imagination spiral off into magical directions.

While you are making your own, why don't you make one for the officers as a thank you gift? These also make great gifts for teachers.

Look for a nametag post coming to this blog soon!

BAM-BOM December: Pine Tree

This post is part of the Block of the Month series, sponsored by Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  See all the blocks right here.

I can't believe we are on the last block already!  Our final block is a paper pieced tree.  There are several different variations for you to chose from, so pick the one you like!

The pattern for this little guy (he's a 6" block) is available as a free download right here.  You do have to put in an email address to download it, but the pattern includes detailed paper piecing instructions.  With the easy block and lots of instructions, this is a great starting point if you haven't paper pieced before.  There's even a video tutorial if you want a little extra help.

If you have some paper piecing experience and don't need much for instructions, you can also pick from the options below, which are template only.  Just click on the picture to open up the template.

Thanks for a wonderful year, and I hope I see all your blocks and quilts in the Flickr pool!

BAM BOM September - Woven

Block: Woven by Ruth Beeby
Size: 12"x12" finished

You will need

(1) 3.5" x 3.5" square from background fabric
(1) 3.5" x 37" strip from background fabric
(4) 12" assorted strips measuring 2"-3" wide
Cut your assorted strips all different widths, or all the same, it's up to you. In this example I used 2.5" strips from my scrap bag.

From the left-hand side of your assorted strips, cut off a 3"-4" piece.
Again, each strip can be different. The strips above were cut at 3", 3.25", 3.5" and 3.75".

The orientation of these cut pieces is important. It is helpful to mark the top with a pin or a dot with a disappearing marker.

Sew a strip of background fabric to the top and bottom of each small cut piece.
Strip piece for speed.

You should now have (4) pieced units and (4) strips. Choose a layout for your block by pairing the pieced units with the leftover strips. Pay careful attention to line it up like the above picture for the woven effect.

Sew each pieced unit to a printed strip. Keep the inside edges of each pieced segment even as you sew. Refer to the photo above. Press open.

Starting at the bottom right, sew the background square to the pieced segment. This first seam is a partial seam. Notice that the inside corners of the background square and the pieced segment are even.
The outside edges can be uneven and that is ok because we will be trimming down the block at the very end.

Here is a closer look at that partial seam. It should be about half the length of your background square. Press open.

Continuing clockwise, sew on the bottom left pieced segment. Notice again that the inside edges are even. Sew together. Press open.

Sew the top left pieced segment on. Press open.

Now sew on the top right pieced segment. One corner of your background square should still be unsewn making it easy to attach now.

From the back of your block, find the partial seam. Line up the last two unsewn edges and start sewing from just before the partial seam, slightly overlapping your stitching. Back tack to lock your beginning stitches.

Trim your block to 12.5"x12.5"
If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments below. We will answer as soon as we can.

You ready for some improv??

I am so excited to announce that our next sew day will be an IMPROV DAY! We are going to be sewing improv baby quilts for boys for the charity team (we have a big imbalance of girl appropriate quilts). We will be sewing on Sunday September 29 12pm-11pm, with noon to 6pm designated for charity projects and 6-11pm set aside for personal projects (if you want).

We will have some guidance available if you need direction, but you are also totally free to go your own way! Scraps that have been donated to the guild will be made available for your use, along with a selection of solids:

Of course, you are always welcome to bring fabrics to use, but there should be plenty available.
Please RSVP so that we can get a head count.  The forum is the preferred method if you are a BAM member - our friends in the South & North Bay are also welcome and can RSVP via Facebook.

Regards and Best Wishes

I wanted to thank all of you for your attention over the past year or so while I tried to provide interesting content for this blog. As with all volunteer organizations, resources are limited and they must be deployed in the most effective manner possible to maximize a limited number of volunteer hours. I am pleased that the board is trying new things and attempting to create a nice mix that serves the group.

The BAM Board has decided to use the blog for a different purpose and, thus, a lot of the content I was providing will no longer be needed in this venue. The new Social Media Chair and the Board will be making the changes soon and I am sure you will see some interesting and exciting new things.

See you soon!

To Boston with Love

We are making flags for Boston!

The Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is collecting flags from guilds around the world.  It's a fun and easy project to do.  Make as many as you'd like and bring them to the meeting on May 11th or to the retreat on May 19th.  UPDATE: The deadline has been moved up.  We will need all flags at the meeting, May 11th.  Thank you.  : )

"The overall idea is to provide Boston with an uplifting experience from quilters and sewists around the globe." - Vancouver MQG

DETAILS
For complete instructions, inspiration and two patterns, go to the Vancouver MQG blog.

  • Size: 6"x8" with a 16" binding strip for ties
  • Colors: Uplifting bright colors (see recommended palette below)
  • Style: Modern
  • Theme: Love, Hearts, Peace

After you make your flag, please add it to the To Boston with Love flickr group or if you're on Instagram tag it #tobostonwithlove.

BAM-BOM Block #4 Spring Mod Block

This post is part of the Block of the Month series, sponsored by Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  See all the blocks right here.

We did not post the March block separately (it was in the meeting report) so if you missed that, the March block was the Snails Trail.

For April, we are teaming up with the Portland Modern Quilt Guild.  They are doing their own BOM, but this month we planned to do the same one at the same time for a bit of extra fun.  Remember this QuiltCon Challenge Block by Heather at joyofallcrafts? (Heather used to live in the Bay Area and was in our guild before moving to Portland a few years ago.)
 .

Awesome, right?  Heather offered (ok, so we kind of volunteered her) to make at tutorial for a 12" version of her block.  Head over to her blog and check out the gorgeous Spring Mod version that she design for us.

Sewing will go from 10am-11pm - any charity project is welcome!
Location:

http://g.co/maps/kvpkt
Note: This is not the same location as our regular meetings.

Shout out if you can bring these items to share:
  • Light/non-messy snacks
  • Irons (need 3 total)
  • Ironing Boards (need 3 total)
  • Large Cutting Mats (need 2)
  • Design Walls (need 2)

Plan to bring your own:
  • Extension cord and/or power strip
  • Sewing machine
  • Cutting tools/mats (you might want a personal one)
  • Night-owls may want to bring an iron and cutting mat if an early-bird needs to take theirs home.

We will be in the Community Room of the Los Altos Library. It's the large room on the side of the library nearest San Antonio Rd. There are two sets of double doors on the outside of the library - both lead into a foyer area, and the Community Room door is on the left part of this foyer, the checkout desk is on the right.

If you arrive first, go talk to the librarian at the children's reference desk to check in.

If you arrive late (after 6pm when the library closes), knock on the doors closest to the Community Room, and someone should be able to let you inside.

We will need to set up and take down tables and chairs, which are available at the library. Please plan to help with this. Also please try to keep your floor area clean.
Coffee and other light snacks are available in the foyer of the library.
People often pick up meals from a local restaurant. There are many places nearby, or you can take San Antonio to El Camino and find many restaurants and markets there.

Thanks to Diana for organizing!
