Winter Extravaganza-Palooza Meeting Notes

Of course, we had a party with lots of food and even a tablecloth to make the event special. First, however, we had a meeting.

The Quilty Question this time was "what technique have you learned and used this year?" Some of the answers were:
  • curves
  • Improv
  • binding
  • double needle threading
  • bags
  • Convergence quilts
  • garment sewing
  • new FMQ patterns
  • EQ
  • full bust adjustment
  • handstitching
  • Instagram
  • using fusible web
  • no ruler cutting
  • hand quilting
There were many other answers. The above is just a sampling. What technique did you learn and use this year?

Charity
The Charity Girls reported that the guild has given away 113 quilts this year! That is an amazing number for our small guild. In order to keep up the good work, they need people to quilt quilt tops. If you can quilt some tops, see Michelle or Peggy at the next meeting. We will now be giving some quilts to an organization called Twice Loved.

The ever popular Postage Stamp kits were available as were some Bowtie block kits.

they are now collecting Wheelchair quilts, which are, basically, 36" squares with corners lopped off. You can make them with a single piece of fabric or from 9" blocks or using other techniques.

Swaps
Joy-Lily handed out the list of blogs that people compiled. Some are:

Modern Quilt Guild

Review the notes from the last meeting for details on the guild's decision not to rejoin the MQG.

The guild's membership expires on 2/15. Mike will be available to help get you set up as an individual member at upcoming meetings.

Guild Library
Lucky Spools offered free quilt books to guilds. They will soon be available for you to check out and review. Guidelines will be created for accepting donations to the library. Kelly will be the new 'librarian'.

Quilty Resolutions
People checked their envelopes to see how they did!

Quilty Happenings
  • Guild meeting dates for 2016 vary from month to month. Please check the meeting list to make sure we see you on the correct date. Please note that the February meeting is just before QuiltCon not during.
  • MQG had a webinar on quilt history with Mary Fons. It is recorded and one of the benefits of membership, so take a listen. Latifah Safir gave a webinar on Monday, which was also recorded
  • Barbara Eichmeier's new collection of fabric is coming out. She is Leann's friend and all the fabric is made in the US.
  • Joy-Lily will be teaching a class at Scruffy Quilts on borders in January and one on house quilts in February
Retreat
Cindy C and Jessica H are co-chairs and recruited committee members at the meeting. No dates have been set but they were encouraged to find a larger venue to accommodate more interested members.

Los Altos Library Exhibit
Michelle S and Peggy collected quilts. Set up will be on January 2. Contact Michelle and Peggy if you have a quilt for the exhibit and were not able to give it to them at the meeting. they need storycards/artist statements, which should include your name, the name of your quilt and your inspiration.

Challenges
The Carol Van Zandt fabric challenge is due at the January meeting. Use the CVZ fabric in an identifiable way to make something to show.

At the break we had the swap of Winter Extravaganza-Palooza gifts and it was a bag explosion. While there were small quilts and other lovely items all different kinds of bags seem to pervade the swap. It was a great.
